Hiring: Legal correspondent

Application deadline: June 15, 2025

Law is one of the most exciting beats in Indian journalism today. Court judgements and controversies dominate news coverage.

We at Scroll are looking for a young journalist with a strong understanding of the law to unpack these hectic developments for our readers.

The candidate will be expected to:

  1. Write quick turnaround stories that explain complex developments around the law to our readers. Think analysis of big judgments, explaining the nuts and bolts of new laws, tracking the proceedings of big PILs and reporting on the appointments of judges.

  2. Have deep knowledge of Indian law.

  3. Understand how the law intersects with politics, culture and the economy – and impacts the lives of Indian citizens.

  4. Go beyond legal reporting and write more widely on what’s making news and topics that interest the correspondent.

  5. Be comfortable with video reporting.

  6. Innovate with formats like explainers, news wraps, newsletters and podcasts, to deliver insights to the audience.

The ideal candidate will have:

  1. Between 2 and 5 years of journalism experience with a reputable news organisation.

  2. A record of published work in legal journalism.

  3. A degree in law (potentially flexible if the candidate can demonstrate a record of competence in legal journalism).

  4. Impeccable writing and analytical skills.

Location: Delhi

To apply, please write a cover letter of no more than 400 words explaining why you would be the right candidate, what legal journalism (from any publication anywhere) you have found most compelling and how you could improve Scroll’s legal coverage.

Candidates from marginalised communities are especially encouraged to apply.

Send a CV and this cover letter to jobs@scroll.in.

Please reference “Legal Correspondent” in the subject line.
